Search component

Search

The search component allows you to create custom search boxes around your site, that can either search the entire site, (as the search field at the top of this wiki does) or specific content. To limit the search to specific content, simply select a node within the "Content To Search" field on the search component. Note that any sub pages will be included in the search.

Within the "Content" tab, there is also an option to add and position an image around your search component to decorate it and make it stand out more on the page.

Let's take a look at a search component, this one has been configured to search for components! Try searching for "news", or something of your choosing below.

A search query is required

The search component can also be configured to search for members. This may be useful if you have a directory of members, perhaps they are therapists or consultants and wish to be listed on the site publicly. To set this up, we'll create a new search component, this time, we won't selected anything under the "Content To Search", instead we'll select a "Member Group To Search" within the "Member Group" tab.

You may notice you can also select specific tags, which will be available to filter Members by. In the "Members" section of the Umbraco Backoffice, there is a "Custom Fields" tab on each Member. This has a "Tags 1" and "Tags 2" field (these can be set by the Member on their profile page if custom fields are turned on within the Member Profile) - these are the fields that the "Member Tags Filter Options" on the search component will filter by. Within the dropdown below ("Member Tags To Show"), you can select whether the filters will occur on Tags 1, Tags 2 or both fields.

So for example, let's say a Member has a tag of "Test" set on their "Tags 1" field. If you add "Test" to the "Member Tags Filter Options" on the search component, then the search will allow filtering only of Members with a Tags 1 of "Test". So if someone searched for "Dan" and there were two Members named Dan, one with a "Test" tag and one without, only the one with the "Test" tag would show.

Note that only Members who have "Search Consent Given" set to yes within the "Contact Details" tab will appear in searches.

A Member search component has been added below, try searching for "Marlon".

We hope you enjoying using the search component within your project!
